English (US)   What's new in Eclipse 3.1?  -  Categories: Tools, Eclipse Platform, CVS, Ant  -  @ 09:44:08 pm
Eclipse 3.1 Available Now! In a previous note, I have announced the release of Eclipse 3.1. Meanwhile, I have read carefully the following page on Eclipse web site: Eclipse 3.1 - New and Noteworthy and I have installed Eclipse 3.1 on my PC. This is a summary of what is new in Eclipse 3.1. You can also read section 3 of my new PowerPoint presentation on Eclipse 3.1 (which will be updated frequently).

[More:]

First Eclipse 3.1 offers a good support of J2SE5. It also adds new features and improvements for the Eclipse Platform itself, the Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT), the use of Concurrent Versions System (CVS) and the Eclipse debugger.

Platforms Changes
- Performances have been enhanced
- Bi-directional languages (languages that are written right-to-left such as Arabic or Hebrew) are now supported by Eclipse
- There is a new Undo/Redo API that can be used by Eclipse editors and views
- Import & Export has been improved: you can import several projects and .tar.gz format is now supported
- Views can be detached
- Eclipse plugins can be packaged into a single Java ARchive (JAR) file
- You can type Ctrl+Shift+L to see all keyboards shortcuts
- Hyperlinks work in all editors included the text editor!
- There is a new Help View that you can call by pressing on F1 key
- Preferences are improved (see my Powerpoint for more details)

SWT improvements
Concerning SWT, Eclipse 3.1 comes with new or improved widgets (Browser, Spinner, Link, Tree with columns, Reorderable table columns) and with a new API for graphics such as curves & lines. Now, you can also download SWT as a standalone library on Eclipse web site. In Eclipse IDE, you have also a new menu to run a Java application as a SWT application.

Misc.
CVS integration and Eclipse debugger has also been improved. Note also that Ant now comes with an Ant Debugger (Great!).

Finally, for people who want more information about Eclipse 3.1, I recommend the following article: What's new in Eclipse 3.1 by Ed Burnette.
