Until now, I was only a user of the Eclipse Platform. Today, I want to know how to create a new simple plug-in with Eclipse 3.1 using the Plug-in Development Environment (PDE). The first goal is really simple: use the PDE to create a kind of Hello World plug-in. What a nice surprise when I have discovered that the Eclipse guys have the idea to create a wizard to do that! This wizard really simplify the creation of a Hello World Eclipse plug-in... |

One big strength of Eclipse compared to other IDE (ok, no name) is that Eclipse is language-agnostic so that you can use Eclipse in many programming languages or development frameworks. To prove that quality, I have written 4 Hello World! programs using Eclipse and using 4 different languages: Java, Ant (ok, it's tool rather than a language), PHP and Ruby on Rails. The level of integration with Eclipse is not the same for every languages, but the language-agnostic promise is respected. |

As in some other scientific domains, Eclipse is probably suffering of some acronym addiction. As deciphering acronyms is always a pain in particular for newcomers, I have created a list of Eclipse acronyms. We can name it EAL for Eclipse Acronym List, if you agree:-). Update (2005-09-02): |
